The Phasing Out of Gas Boiler Installations
The UK gas boiler ban will come into effect as part of the UK Government’s agenda to reduce carbon emissions and achieve it’s Net Zero plan by 2050. Although the timeline for phasing out of gas boilers is still unclear, the Government is said to commitment to reducing household carbon emissions as part of their wider decarbonisation strategy.
It is widely reported that the UK Government is committed to supporting millions of households to reduce their carbon footprints’ with the introduction of renewable energy grants and incentives to install low carbon heating systems to replace gas and oil fired systems. The UK gas boiler ban will be phased in by firstly banning gas boilers in new build properties from 2025 and then banning new gas boilers in general from 2035. This will ultimately lead to discontinuing the sale of these types of boilers in years to come.
Gas Boiler Ban - What The Government Says
- Government sets out plan to drive down the cost of low carbon heating technologies like heat pumps, working with industry to ensure that in future they are no more expensive to buy and run for consumers as fossil fuel boilers
- Households to benefit from £5,000 government grants through £450 million Boiler Upgrade Scheme to help install low-carbon heating systems, part of more than £3.9 billion of new funding to decarbonise heat and buildings
- £60 million innovation fund launched to make clean heat systems smaller and easier to install and cheaper to run
- Funding supports government’s confirmed ambition for all new heating systems installed in UK homes from 2035 to be low carbon
Why Are Gas Boilers Being Banner?
It is understood that homes in the UK contribute to more carbon emissions that vehicles. The research by NHF says that 25 million homes produce 58.5 million tonnes of CO2 every year, which is equal to the emissions of 28 million cars. There are 27 million cars in England that emit 56 million tonnes of CO2 every year.
With the introduction of the gas boiler in the UK, the Government is hoping to encourage households to switch from fossil fuel heating systems to more environmentally friendly renewable energy systems such as Heat Pumps and Solar PV. As announced in April 2021, The Government has set the most ambitious target to reduce emissions by 78% by 2035.
Gas Boiler Ban In New Homes
For existing homes, there will not be an outright ban on gas boilers, and the Heat & Buildings Strategy confirmed that no one will be forced to remove them from their homes. Instead, the government outlined a slightly softer approach to UK homes transitioning from natural gas to more sustainable heating sources.
For new homes, it has been expected as part of the Future Homes Standard that no new homes will be able to connect the gas network from 2025. Instead, they will be equipped with energy-efficient insulation and heated by a low-carbon heating systems such as Air Source Heat Pumps and Solar Electricity.
What Will Replace Gas Boilers?
Whilst the Government intends to impose a gas boiler ban, many households are wondering what alternative heating solutions are available and the viability of low carbon heating systems. With the phasing out of fossil fuels, the UK Government are encouraging households to invest in renewable energy systems such as Air Source Heat Pumps, which do not rely on gas to run.
Whilst Air Source Heat Pumps can save a typical family £1200 – £1400 on heating bills each year, the cost of an installation can be between £5000 – £12000 depending on the size of the systems and any upgrades needed to your current wet system.
