When Does The Renewable Heat Incentive End?
When does the RHI end – Well, we can confirm that the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive is due to close to new applicants from the 31 March 2022. It is still possible to make an application before the closing date as long as your contractor submits all the relevant paperwork before the cut off point.
What is the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)
The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a government financial incentive to promote the use of renewable heat. Switching to heating systems that use eligible energy sources can help the UK reduce its carbon emissions and meet its renewable energy targets.
Since opening in April 2014, the scheme has already seen thousands of people successfully join and receive payments. The Domestic RHI provides financial incentives to owners of domestic properties who install renewable heating technologies such as ground source heat pumps and solar thermal on their premises.
What Is Replacing The RHI?
The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (Domestic RHI) will come to an end at the of March 2022 and will be replaced by the Government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme. The main differences between the RHI and BUS is that instead of ongoing quarterly payments made on the basis of the energy you generate, BUS will be a one-off lump sum or either £5000 for an Air Source Heat Pump or £6000 for a Ground Source Heat Pump. The table below shows the differences in RHI tariffs since April 2017.
Renewable Heat Incentive Domestic | RHI tariffs pence/kWh from April 2017 | RHI tariffs pence/kWh from April 2018 | RHI tariffs pence/kWh from April 2019 | RHI tariffs pence/kWh from April 2020 | Tariff lifetime in years |
Ground source heat pumps | 19.86 | 20.46 | 20.89 | 21.16 | 7 |
Air to water heat pumps | 10.18 | 10.49 | 10.71 | 10.86 | 7 |
Solar thermal | 20.06 | 20.66 | 21.09 | 21.36 | 7 |
Biomass | 4.28 | 6.74 | 6.88 | 6.97 | 7 |
RHI Payments After April 1st 2022
If your applicant to receive the Renewable Heat Incentive was granted before the deadline dates of 31st March 2022, you will still receive your payments through the RHI scheme. The tariff lifetime is guaranteed for 7 years, which means that as long as you get your application granted before the deadline, you will still receive quarterly payments for the energy you generate.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme Launch April 2022
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme launch will be in April 2022 (Clean Heat Grant) and will enable homeowners across England and Wales to be able to apply for a £5000 grant from the U.K Government as part of a drive to encourage a switch to renewable energy. These technologies include Air Source Heat Pumps, Biomass Heating and Ground Source Heat Pumps. This new Government grant will support homeowners to access u to £5000 for an ASHP installation and £7000 towards a Ground Source Heat Pump installation.
How To Apply For The Boiler Upgrade Scheme
Homeowners can apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme April 2022 after they have consulted with and received at least one quotation from a certified installer. Once the vouchers have been issued, work must be completed within 3 months for biomass boilers and air source heat pumps.
This timeline is extended to 6 months for time-consuming, bigger installations such as ground source heat pumps and water source heat pumps. Vouchers of up to £7,000 will be made available and can be redeemed once the work has been completed.
The eligibility criteria for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme are similar to that of Domestic RHI as the grant is expected to replace RHI in helping existing homes. These include:
- A valid EPC that has a rating between A and G and is within 10 years
- The property must be an existing building or custom made construction (retrofit). The Clean Home Grant is not available for new build properties.
- You must get at least 2 quotes from an MSC approved contractor to carry out the work
- Approved contractors music hold MCS and be TrustMark registered under Government backed scheme.
